Stranded truck driver rescued after ignoring closed Yakutia ice road warnings
A truck driver from Amur Region was rescued in Yakutia after ignoring warnings about a closed ice road. The incident took place near the village of Ugolnoye in Verkhnekolymsky District, where the driver’s KamAZ truck broke down roughly 20-30 kilometres from help. Authorities have since reminded travellers to avoid restricted routes for their own safety. The driver found himself stranded after attempting to cross an ice road that had officially closed on April 20. Realising the danger, he called emergency services on 112 for assistance.
Verkhnekolymsky District head Yevgeny Barkov ordered an immediate rescue operation. A team was dispatched, including a police officer, a medic, an emergency response specialist, and a local official. They successfully reached the driver and transported him to the Verkhnekolymsky District Central Hospital. His condition was later confirmed as stable. The district administration has since warned residents and visitors against using closed ice roads or crossings. Officials stressed that ignoring such restrictions not only puts individuals at risk but also endangers the lives of rescuers.
The driver’s rescue highlights the dangers of travelling on closed seasonal routes. Local authorities continue to urge caution, advising people to prioritise safety for themselves and their families. The ice road in question remains off-limits to all traffic.
