Essen snatches narrow 1–0 win over Fürth in tense first leg

Fürth and Essen played out a tense encounter with little to separate them in the first leg. The match ended with a narrow 1–0 victory for Essen, thanks to a single goal. Both sides now look ahead to the return fixture on Tuesday in Fürth.

The first half saw few clear chances, with the scoreline remaining 0–0 at the break. Fürth came closest in the 16th minute when Jannik Dehm’s powerful shot struck the crossbar. Despite their efforts, they struggled to break down Essen’s well-organised defence.

After the interval, Essen stepped up their pressure. Their persistence paid off when Müsell found the net, giving them a crucial lead. Fürth pushed hard for an equaliser but lacked the sharpness in attack to convert their opportunities. In the closing stages, Essen defended intelligently, holding firm against Fürth’s attempts to level the score. Their compact shape frustrated the home side, who could not find a way through.

Essen now carry a slender advantage into the second leg. A draw in Fürth will be enough to secure their progression. The return match takes place on Tuesday, where both teams will aim to settle the tie.
