Eastern Iowa high school athletes kick off intense postseason battles
High school athletes from across eastern Iowa are gearing up for postseason competition this week. Several teams and individuals have qualified for regional and district meets in golf, while soccer squads prepare for their first playoff matches.
Golfers will compete in district tournaments across different classes, with top performers aiming for state berths. Meanwhile, boys' soccer teams have learned their opening-round opponents in the state playoffs
In boys' soccer, Anamosa will take on Maquoketa in the Class 1A first-round match. The game marks the start of the Blue Raiders' playoff campaign.
West Delaware travels to Dubuque to face Wahlert Catholic in Class 2A action. Their match will be held at the Rock Bowl on Loras College's campus. Golf competition begins with district meets across the state. In Class 1A boys golf, Maquoketa Valley's Eli Dougherty will play at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo. Starmont and East Buchanan will compete at Rice Lake Course near Lake Mills, while North Linn and Central City head to Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The Class 2A boys golf district meet features Cascade, Monticello, and Beckman Catholic's Jacob Wegmann. They will play at Heritage Oaks Course near Mediapolis. West Delaware and Independence will compete in the Class 3A district meet at Gardner Golf Course in Marion. Girls golf regional qualifiers include Olivia Begle from Maquoketa Valley, who advanced individually in Class 1A. Starmont, Beckman Catholic, East Buchanan, and Ed-Co teams also qualified for the same class. Anamosa's Sophie Sander and Olivia Miller will represent their school in Class 2A regional competition
The coming days will determine which teams and individuals move forward in their respective sports. Golfers will vie for spots at state tournaments, while soccer teams aim to advance in the playoff brackets. Results from these early competitions will shape the next stages of postseason play.
