Mariners fall 8-3 to Padres as offensive struggles continue

The Seattle Mariners suffered an 8-3 defeat against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. The loss leaves them third in the AL West with a 22-26 record. A five-run sixth inning from the Padres sealed the game after a slow start for both sides. Gavin Sheets powered the Padres early, hitting a solo home run in the first inning. His second blast—a three-run shot in the sixth—helped extend their lead to 8-1. Ty France also contributed with an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth.

The Mariners struggled offensively, managing just one hit: a second-inning single by Luke Raley. They went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and stranded five runners on base. Their only runs came late, but the damage was already done.

JP Crawford, Seattle’s longest-serving player, exited the game after being struck by a 91.6 mph fastball from Lucas Giolito in the third inning. He left due to inflammation and limited throwing ability, finishing the day with a .217/.361/.377 batting line and six home runs this season. The defeat drops the Mariners two games behind the Athletics and one game out of the final AL wild card spot. They will look to bounce back on Monday when they host the Chicago White Sox, with Bryan Woo facing Noah Schultz on the mound.
