The image shows a police car parked on the side of the road next to a police truck, with a group of people standing on the ground, a bucket, some stones, a ribbon, a banner with some text on it, a street pole, some trees, and a cloudy sky. The scene is likely the aftermath of a fatal shooting in Fresno, California.

Deputy Jon Samuelson fights for recovery after life-altering courthouse shooting

A La Porte County sheriff’s deputy remains in critical condition after a shooting that may leave him paralysed. The incident has prompted an outpouring of support, with colleagues raising funds for his family. Meanwhile, the suspect has entered a not guilty plea in court.

Deputy Jon Samuelson was shot and critically wounded in Michigan City, Indiana, on Tuesday. The attack allegedly came from Sharod Grafton, a 22-year-old now facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and battery against a public safety official. Doctors have warned that Samuelson may be paralysed from the chest down.

Grafton appeared in court and pled not guilty to all charges. Prosecutors have since added a firearm enhancement, which could lengthen his sentence if convicted. He is currently held on a $100,000 cash bond, with his next status hearing scheduled for July 12 and a trial date set for November 9. In a show of solidarity, Samuelson’s co-workers have begun selling ‘Sammy Strong’ wristbands outside the courthouse. The wristbands symbolise unity and support for the deputy’s recovery. All proceeds will go directly to Samuelson and his wife. A heartwarming moment was captured when Samuelson was reunited with his K-9 partner, Bosco, in the intensive care unit on Tuesday. The photo has since circulated as a sign of hope during his difficult recovery.

The case against Sharod Grafton will proceed through the courts, with key dates set for July and November. Meanwhile, the community continues to rally behind Deputy Jon Samuelson, raising funds and showing support as he faces a long road ahead. The wristband sales and visits from Bosco highlight the bond between the deputy and his colleagues.
