Davao City battles deadly floods after relentless May downpours
Heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding across Davao City on 18 May, submerging low-lying and riverside neighbourhoods. The downpour forced hundreds of families to evacuate, disrupted power supplies, and led to one confirmed death. Local authorities responded by suspending classes and government work to ensure public safety.
The floods struck after hours of relentless rain, affecting areas such as Matina Pangi, Matina Crossing, and Bunawan. Emergency teams were quickly deployed to rescue stranded residents and monitor rivers at critical levels. At least 358 families were moved to temporary shelters as floodwaters rose.
Power cuts followed the flooding, but Davao Light worked to restore electricity as waters began to recede. By Wednesday, most evacuees had returned home after conditions improved. However, officials remained vigilant, tracking potential landslides, swollen rivers, and health risks like leptospirosis from contaminated water. The Consulate-General of Japan in Davao extended its sympathies to those impacted, reflecting the country’s ongoing humanitarian support for Mindanao. Japan has long maintained strong disaster response ties with the region, including previous relief efforts in the Davao area.
The city government’s suspension of classes and office work on 19 May aimed to reduce risks during the crisis. With floodwaters now receding, recovery efforts continue, though authorities are still assessing long-term impacts on infrastructure and public health.
