Daniel Worrall's England eligibility sparks Test selection buzz after Surrey heroics
Former Australian fast bowler Daniel Worrall has become eligible to play for England after completing a three-year residency period. The 32-year-old, who joined Surrey in 2022, has already made an impact in county cricket with a five-wicket haul in his latest match. Worrall first represented Australia in 2016, playing three one-day internationals and taking a single wicket. His career shifted when he moved to England, qualifying through his British passport.
His County Championship debut this season saw him claim 5-35 against Nottinghamshire on May 8. In that match, he dismissed Haseeb Hameed, Ben Slater, Ben Duckett, Joe Haynes, and Kyle Verreynne. This performance followed a strong 2022 season, where he took 32 wickets in nine games at an average of 26.65. Across his first-class career, Worrall has now taken 405 wickets in 105 matches at 25.47. His form has caught the attention of former England players and officials. David Warner and Alec Stewart have both backed him for an England call-up, while England’s director of cricket, Rob Key, has not ruled out the possibility.
Worrall’s eligibility for England opens a new chapter in his career. With consistent performances in county cricket, he could soon earn a place in the national side. His experience and recent form make him a strong contender for future selection.
