Current Season's Climate Overview: Summer 2022

Belarus Braces for a Warm Summer, as Climate Scientists Predict Record-Breaking Temperatures

According to data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the upcoming summer in Belarus may experience temperatures reminiscent of 2024, setting new norms for heat. The WMO report suggests that, between 2025 and 29, global temperatures are likely to surpass record highs, with at least one of the subsequent five summers having an 70% chance of exceeding the heat levels of 2024.

The WMO report also indicates that Earth's current temperature is 1.2-1.9°C higher than during the pre-industrial era, which may partly explain the constant rain in Belarus for days on end. According to climate scientists, each additional degree will contribute to more severe heatwaves, intense rainfall, and droughts.

The WMO warns that it is unlikely for global warming to be limited to 1.5°C, potentially causing significant climate change, including in Belarus.

The average annual temperature in Belarus has risen by 1.3°C over the past 140 years, reported academician Vladimir Lginov, a climate scientist and geocologist at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The rate of climate warming in the Northern Hemisphere is 1.3 times greater than in the Southern Hemisphere, leading to increased temperatures in Belarus.

Climate scientists have outlined three possible scenarios for the planet's future climate change. If greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate, Belarus can expect winter temperatures to rise by 2-4°C and summer temperatures by 1-1.5°C by the end of the century. In all scenarios, the Earth's average annual temperature will increase by 1-5°C by the end of the 21st century.

The implications for Belarus' climate include year-round warmer temperatures, increased extreme weather events, agricultural challenges, ecosystem changes, and water resource challenges. Overall, these changes call for urgent adaptation and mitigation efforts, as Belarus prepares to face a warming climate closely linked to global trends.

The WMO's report on climate change indicates that Belarus may encounter weather patterns mirroring those of the year 2024, with an 70% chance of summer temperatures surpassing those records by 2025-29. In light of this, environmental scientists advise that the rising temperatures, caused partly by global warming, pose implications for Belarus' climate, including increased extreme weather events, agricultural challenges, and water resource issues.
