China-Hungary travel surges as visa rules ease and flights expand in 2024

Travel between China and Hungary is growing stronger in 2024. Nearly 200,000 Chinese tourists visited Hungary this year, while around 157,000 Hungarians travelled to China. The increase follows easier visa rules and improved travel services on both sides. China has opened its doors wider to international visitors as global tourism rebounds. The country now offers unilateral visa-free entry for citizens of 48 nations, including Hungary. Additional agreements allow mutual visa exemptions with other countries, simplifying travel for many.

To make visits smoother, China has introduced mobile payment options and on-site tax refunds. These changes aim to improve convenience for tourists exploring the country’s diverse attractions. Hungary’s interest in Chinese travel has grown, supported by regular direct flights between Budapest and multiple Chinese cities. Stable air links provide efficient connections for both business and leisure travellers. China’s appeal lies in its ‘four core experiences’: deep cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, world-class cuisine, and unique adventure opportunities. Events like the Zigong Lantern Festival and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Tourism & Creative Expo have already launched in Budapest, offering a taste of Chinese traditions. Beyond mainland policies, Hainan Province allows visa-free entry for travellers from nearly 60 countries. Certain port cities and regions also provide visa-free access for specific visitors, making China a year-round destination with seasonal highlights.

The rise in two-way tourism reflects stronger ties between China and Hungary. With simplified visas, better services, and cultural exchanges, travel between the two nations is expected to keep growing. Direct flights and seasonal attractions further support this trend.
