Spencer Pratt jumps into LA mayoral race after wildfire loss

Reality TV personality Spencer Pratt has announced his bid for Los Angeles mayor. The election, set for June 2, comes after last year’s devastating wildfires destroyed his home and spurred his political ambitions. Pratt is running as a Republican in a city where the last GOP mayor left office over two decades ago. Pratt’s decision to enter the race stems from personal loss. His house was destroyed in the 2023 wildfires, an event he calls a turning point. He has since criticised incumbent Mayor Karen Bass for her handling of the crisis, arguing the city needs stronger leadership.

Despite his lack of political experience, Pratt compares himself to Barack Obama’s early career. He insists his fresh perspective will help address local issues like street repairs, public safety, and infrastructure. His campaign slogan—'fix our streets, get the lights on, and make people feel safe'—focuses on practical concerns rather than partisan divides.

Most of Pratt’s supporters are Democrats, drawn to his emphasis on city-level problems over national politics. He claims he can secure 51% of the vote on June 2, avoiding a November runoff. If no candidate wins a majority, the top two will face a second round on November 3. Pratt’s candidacy adds an unexpected twist to the Los Angeles mayoral race. His platform centres on recovery from the wildfires and improving daily life for residents. The election results will determine whether his lack of experience becomes a hurdle or an advantage.
