Botswana's Gambling Authority tackles addiction with Maun outreach campaign
The Gambling Authority of Botswana recently wrapped up a series of outreach events in Maun. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about problem gambling and provide support to those affected. Activities included public discussions, mobile clinics, and educational sessions for teachers and parents.
The initiative began on May 17 with a partnership at the New Jerusalem Social Club’s Sunday Soccer event. Officials set up an information stall and mobile clinic to engage residents on gambling risks. Two days later, on May 19, the Authority held an educational session for teachers and parents, focusing on informed decision-making and recognising harm.
On May 20, members of the Minister’s Fraternal joined a discussion in Maun about the dangers of problem gambling. Throughout the campaign, officials directed attendees to professional support services and shared self-help tools for managing betting behaviour. The Authority also ensured long-term accessibility by returning to Maun regularly. This followed a similar two-day clinic held in April. Under the Gambling Act of 2012, the organisation integrates safer gambling education into its broader mandate, reaching residents in public spaces to foster open conversations.
The May outreach concluded with mobile clinic services at Maun Senior Secondary School and the Mall Mobile Clinic. The Authority also engaged school heads and guidance teachers to promote a regulated gaming environment. These efforts form part of a consistent schedule to provide ongoing support and harm reduction tools.
