Bonn cracks down on cyclist and e-bike accidents with new safety push
In 2025, a total of 851 cyclists and e-bike riders were involved in accidents on roads under the jurisdiction of the Bonn police, along with 229 motorized two-wheeler riders and 129 e-scooter users. To reduce the number of accidents among these particularly vulnerable road users, the Bonn police are combining enforcement measures with prevention efforts.
Key issues included distracted driving, especially the use of smartphones or headphones while on the road.
Another major cause of accidents—turning-related hazards—was addressed in numerous traffic safety discussions with all road users. Cyclists, for example, are often overlooked when vehicles turn, particularly in the so-called "blind spot."
In addition to speeding and excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs poses a significant accident risk. These regulations also apply to bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters.
Proper lighting, protective gear, visibility on the road, and—above all—wearing a bicycle helmet significantly enhance personal safety.
Yesterday, over 20 police officers conducted checks at various control points across the jurisdiction well into the evening. More than 200 traffic violations by cyclists and 141 by other road users were penalized. During speed enforcement, particularly near schools, over 2,700 vehicles were monitored, with 125 found to be exceeding the limit.
As part of the campaign, Bonn police traffic accident prevention officers also held prevention events, including bicycle safety training at seven primary schools.
