Berlin and Brandenburg see record April rain and sunshine in 2024
April Brought Above-Average Rainfall to Berlin and Brandenburg—Along with Plenty of Sunshine
Offenbach/Berlin/Potsdam (dpa) — Berlin and Brandenburg experienced significantly higher-than-average rainfall in April, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). In Brandenburg, precipitation levels were three times higher than in March, with meteorologists recording around 45 liters per square meter based on preliminary data. "In the state rankings, this could place Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt at the top," the DWD stated.
Locally, parts of northern Brandenburg saw extreme downpours, with some areas receiving 60 to 80 liters per square meter within 24 hours. Berlin ranked second in rainfall totals, with 40 liters per square meter—matching the long-term average for the 1961–1990 reference period. Brandenburg, meanwhile, fell four liters short of that benchmark.
DWD: 255 Hours of Sunshine in Berlin and Brandenburg
Yet April was not just about rain: Berlin also enjoyed an "unusually high" amount of sunshine. The capital and Brandenburg logged 255 hours of sunlight, the DWD reported—94 hours above the 1961–1990 average (161 hours) for Berlin. Brandenburg exceeded its climate norm by 92 hours.
Preliminary figures show Berlin's average April temperature at 9.3°C, 0.9°C warmer than the 1961–1990 reference period. Brandenburg's average was slightly lower, at 8.7°C.
