Baku's Carpet Festival weaves tradition with global trade ambitions
Baku has hosted the International Carpet Festival for the second time this year. The event ran until 3 May and brought together artists, traders and experts from around the world. Organisers highlighted strong international interest in Azerbaijan’s traditional craft and its growing export market. The festival opened with talks on the challenges facing the global carpet industry. Discussions covered trade, sustainability and innovation in textile production. Azerbaijan’s own carpet sector has seen steady growth, with exports reaching around $139,000 in 2025.
Co-organised by Azerkhalcha and the Icherisheher Reserve, the festival received backing from the Ministry of Economy and the Export and Investment Promotion Agency. Emin Mammadov, Chairman of Azerkhalcha, noted the wide international participation. Rufət Mahmud, Chairman of the Icherisheher State Historical Reserve, also shared enthusiasm for the event’s programme. Among the highlights was Belgian textile artist Laurine Malengro’s exhibition, *Souls in Motion*. The show drew attention for its modern take on traditional techniques. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s key export markets—including the U.S. and China—remained a focus for local producers looking to expand their reach.
The festival wrapped up after days of exhibitions, workshops and trade discussions. Azerbaijan’s carpet industry continues to build its global presence, supported by both public agencies and cultural events. Organisers have already begun planning for future editions in Baku.
