A chaotic move to Dubai brought career growth and 45% pay raise
Renee O’Drobinak and her husband relocated to Dubai at the end of March, despite growing tensions in the region. The move came with a new marketing role for O’Drobinak—and a 45 percent pay increase. Their journey, however, was far from smooth. The couple left behind a one-bedroom flat in southeast London, where they had commuted daily to Marylebone. O’Drobinak had worked as head of communications at an architecture firm before accepting the Dubai position.
Their flight encountered severe turbulence and a lightning strike. Upon landing, a missile alert flashed on their phones. Outside the airport, heavy flooding blocked roads, delaying their trip to an Airbnb by four hours. Within five days of arrival, O’Drobinak began training for her new job. Now settled, she rents a two-bedroom apartment near a key metro station in Dubai Marina.
The move marked a significant career and lifestyle shift for O’Drobinak. Her salary jumped by nearly half, and she now lives in a larger home with better transport links. The transition, however, started with chaos—from mid-air turbulence to flooded streets and security warnings.
