April 25: A Day of Revolutions, Folklore and Lunar Shifts

St. Basil the Steamer (Vasily Parilshchik)

Old Style date: April 12.

The saint commemorated on this day was actually named Basil of Paris. In the 8th century, he served as bishop in the city of Paris and was a defender of icon veneration, ultimately falling victim to the iconoclastic persecutions then sweeping the Byzantine Empire.

The Russian people, however, as often happened, reshaped his name into Vasily Parilshchik ("the Steamer"). The explanation was simple: "On Vasily's day, spring steams the earth," peasants observed. The land was sometimes personified—"It steams like an old woman in a bathhouse." If the saying proved true and the sun warmed the soil well, a good harvest could be expected.

Omens and Beliefs

Hunters believed that on this day, bears emerging from hibernation would hide in the bushes, so one had to move through the forest with great caution. They also recalled sayings about hares: "Hare, hare, jump out of the bush!" hunters would chant to flush out game. Life was no easier for the hare—if not shot by a human, it might be caught by a predator. "The hare has gone gray, having seen its share of troubles," they said of those that had traded their white winter coats for spring gray.

Moon Phase

As of April 25, until 3:59 PM Moscow time, it is the eighth day of the lunar cycle:

  • 8th lunar day – The second quarter begins; the Moon is waxing.

Moon phase: Second quarter, waxing Moon.

Day's characteristics: The start of the Moon's second phase—a day of change, responsibility, and tension. Unresolved tasks feel more pressing today, and forgotten problems resurface. An active day when unexpected events may occur.

Personal Impact: Today marks a shift toward a new phase of growth or fresh endeavors, so timely preparation and adaptability in behavior will be key. Mood swings are possible. This is not a day for procrastination—push yourself to stay active. To succeed, set aside personal ambitions and try to bring new partners and colleagues on board with your plans and projects. Workplace dynamics are changing, so restraint, caution, and good judgment will be essential.

Business and Finance: A high-stress day with intense pressure—avoid overworking. Tread carefully with management to avoid clashes; today, you risk being on the receiving end of a superior's frustration. Teamwork and seeking new partnerships will go well, though workplace relationships may remain unstable. Legal matters, however, stand a good chance of resolving in your favor. Avoid major financial transactions—stick to minor monetary decisions only.

Health: Pay close attention to those who are ill, as complications or prolonged discomfort could arise. Practice moderation in your diet. A fasting or detox day—cleansing the stomach and intestines—would be highly beneficial. It's also an excellent time to prepare medicinal remedies, especially complex ones.
