Regional Weather: Springlike Warmth Raises Wildfire Risk
Wildfire risks surge as dry conditions spark regional alerts
This weekend, the region can expect springlike temperatures with plenty of sunshine and warmth. Though summer heat is still far off, wildfire danger is already on the rise. Parts of the region will even face Warning Level 4 this weekend.
Even in spring, when conditions are not yet extremely hot and dry, the risk of forest and brush fires remains, as shown by the Forest Fire Danger Index (WBI) of Germany's National Meteorological Service (DWD). The index assesses the meteorological potential for wildfires on a scale from 1 (very low risk) to 5 (very high risk).
Level 4 Alerts in the Region
Monitoring stations across the region currently show Level 2 and 3 warnings for Thursday and the coming days. Wittingen-Vorhop is at Level 3, but could escalate to Level 4 by the weekend. Braunschweig remains at Level 2 on Thursday, with Level 3 possible over the weekend. Helmstedt-Emmerstedt, Seesen, Braunlage, and Bad Harzburg are under Level 2 and 3 alerts.
Preventing Wildfires: No Sparks, No Fires
The vast majority of wildfires are caused by human activity. While a spark from lightning can ignite a fire after prolonged dry spells, such blazes are usually extinguished by the accompanying rain, according to the state's official website.
To prevent wildfires, the public is urged to follow these critical guidelines:
- From March 1 to October 31, lighting fires or smoking is strictly prohibited in forests and open landscapes.
- Barbecuing is permitted only at designated grill sites.
- Do not park vehicles with catalytic converters over dry grass.
- Never block forest roads—they serve as emergency access routes for firefighters.
- Dispose of burning or smoldering items properly—never toss cigarette butts or other ignitable waste.
- Stay vigilant and report any signs of wildfire immediately by calling 112.
