The sky is visible above the trees, and the ground is covered with a few wooden sticks and grass. Wildfire ravages Alberta's Sandy Beach, destroying homes and forcing emergency response

A wildfire tore through the Summer Village of Sandy Beach in Sturgeon County on May 3, 2026. The blaze destroyed three homes and damaged a fourth before firefighters brought it under control the following day. Authorities have since declared a state of emergency for the area. The fire began east of the community before spreading into Sandy Beach. As flames approached, local officials issued an emergency declaration to mobilise resources and warn residents.

Fire crews from several nearby jurisdictions joined the effort. They worked through the night to contain the blaze, finally halting its progress by May 4. Despite their efforts, three properties were lost, and another suffered significant damage. Investigators are now examining the scene to determine how the wildfire started. No further details on the cause have been released at this time.

The Summer Village of Sandy Beach remains under a state of emergency as recovery efforts begin. Residents affected by the fire will receive support from local authorities while the investigation continues. Officials have not yet provided a timeline for when the emergency declaration will be lifted.
