Wild Pentecost parties in Lignano leave chaos and clashes behind
Lignano saw a wild night of celebrations as thousands of young Austrian tourists partied into Pentecost Sunday. The lively gatherings left streets cluttered with rubbish and led to minor clashes, prompting police to step in. Local authorities had prepared for the influx but still faced challenges from rowdy behaviour.
The festivities began on Saturday night, with crowds filling bars and beaches. While many venues stuck to the agreed 1 AM closing time, some revellers continued partying late into the night. The chaos resulted in ten damaged beach umbrellas and scattered litter across the resort.
Police intervened in several minor brawls, and one young Austrian man was arrested before being taken to hospital for treatment. Hotel operators also reported issues, including disputes and unauthorised entry into rooms. By Sunday morning, a coordinated cleanup effort had restored much of the area’s usual tidiness. Extra measures were introduced for Pentecost Monday, such as additional traffic personnel and a breakdown service to ease the return journey for visitors. Mayor Laura Giorgi stressed the importance of finding a balance between the fun of young tourists and the needs of residents and businesses. Massimiliano Fedriga, president of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, urged visitors to respect the town and its community.
The incident highlighted the strain large gatherings can place on coastal resorts. Authorities managed to clear most of the mess by morning and reinforced support for the return travel. Officials continue to call for more responsible behaviour from future visitors.
