Vienna grinds to a halt as three mega-events collide on Sunday

Vienna faces major traffic disruptions on Sunday as three large events take place across the city. The Wings for Life World Run, the Eurovision Song Contest, and the Vienna Derby between Rapid Wien and Austria Wien have all contributed to gridlock. Authorities warn of severe delays, road closures, and heavy police presence in key areas.

The day’s chaos began early when Schönbrunner Schlossstraße shut at 10 a.m. for the Wings for Life World Run. Drivers were rerouted via Hietzinger Kai, while other partial closures affected Hadikgasse, Linke Wienzeile, Franz-Josefs-Kai, and areas around Stadionbrücke, Praterstern, Lassallestraße, and Reichsbrücke. The run’s route was altered to avoid Rathausplatz, where Eurovision’s opening ceremony was underway.

By early afternoon, traffic had already stalled in many parts of the city. The Ring, between the Opera and Schottentor, remained closed from 12 p.m. until after midnight due to Eurovision preparations. Meanwhile, the Vienna Derby added further strain, with heavy congestion expected between Schwarzenbergplatz and Votivkirche. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., key routes like Westeinfahrt, Linzer Straße, Hütteldorfer Straße, and Flötzersteig faced increased traffic. Police also boosted their presence in Hütteldorf, anticipating fan clashes—a recurring issue during past Vienna Derby matches.

The combination of a charity run, a global music event, and a high-profile football match has brought Vienna’s roads to a standstill. Closures, diversions, and heightened security measures will remain in place until late Sunday. Commuters and visitors are advised to plan for significant delays throughout the evening.
