Soviet-Era Car Museum Opens in Rural Russia to Boost Agritourism
A new exhibition complex has opened in Sharang, Nizhny Novgorod Region, showcasing a remarkable collection of Soviet-era cars. The Retro Auto Park features dozens of vintage vehicles, including rare models tied to classic Russian cinema. Funded by a government grant, the project aims to boost local agritourism and attract visitors from across the country. The collection belongs to Alexander Bakhtin, a local farmer who has spent 30 years gathering these historic cars. Among the highlights is the four-wheeled microcar famously driven by characters in Leonid Gaidai’s 1968 comedy The Diamond Arm. The display also includes other iconic models from the Soviet automotive industry.
The project received a 10-million-ruble grant ($110,000) from Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture as part of its agritourism initiative. Launched in 2022, the programme has so far awarded 13 grants to develop rural attractions. Dmitry Ozhiganov, head of the Sharang Municipal District, described the collection as incredibly important for the area. Officials expect the Retro Auto Park to draw visitors not just from the district but from the wider region and beyond. The site adds to Sharang’s growing appeal as a destination for tourists interested in history and vintage automobiles.
The Retro Auto Park is now open to the public, offering a unique glimpse into Soviet automotive heritage. Supported by government funding, the exhibition strengthens the region’s agritourism sector. Organisers anticipate a steady flow of visitors eager to explore the rare and carefully preserved vehicles.
