Southern Section finals showcase record-breaking relays and heartbreaking errors

The Southern Section track and field finals delivered standout performances and unexpected setbacks. Several athletes and relay teams secured their spots in the state championships, while others faced disappointment.

Among the highlights, Rosary Academy broke a state record in the 4x100-meter relay, while Long Beach Wilson’s girls showed strength in the 4x400-meter event.

Rosary Academy dominated early in the season. On April 11, their 4x100-meter relay team set a new state record at the Arcadia Invitational, finishing in 44.23 seconds. They later qualified for the finals with a time of 45.13 seconds, cementing their place as top contenders. Maliyah Collins played a key role, taking a commanding lead during her anchor leg.

In the boys' 100 meters, Benjamin Harris entered as the favourite and lived up to expectations. He won his heat with a wind-legal time of 10.36 seconds. Cy Lugo of Elk Grove posted the fastest overall time, though his 10.20 seconds was wind-aided. Meanwhile, Malia Rainey, Marley Scoggins, and Olivia Kirk from Calabasas secured their positions as the top qualifiers in the girls' 100 meters. The boys' 4x100-meter relay saw Servite take the first heat in 40.29 seconds. However, Calabasas suffered a major blow in the same event when their team dropped the baton in the finals, ending their state championship hopes. Their girls' 4x100-meter relay squad failed to advance as a result. Long Beach Wilson’s girls excelled in individual and relay events. Clara Adams won her 400 meters heat in 53.53 seconds. The school’s 4x400-meter relay team also impressed, recording the fourth-fastest qualifying time of 3:46.73.

The Southern Section finals confirmed Rosary Academy’s dominance in the 4x100-meter relay and highlighted strong individual performances. Calabasas’ baton error cost them a place in the state finals, while Long Beach Wilson’s relay and sprint success secured their progression. The stage is now set for the upcoming state championships.
