Sochi FC's relegation from Russian Premier League confirmed after late draw
Sochi FC’s relegation from the Russian Premier League has now been confirmed. After 29 matches, the club sits in 16th place with just 21 points. Their latest draw in Grozny sealed their fate with one round still remaining. The team’s struggles this season follow a controversial promotion last year. Sochi FC originally won a playoff against Pari Nizhny Novgorod 4–3 on aggregate. However, their place in the top flight came after another club faced licensing issues.
Their final hope of survival faded in a 1–1 draw away to Akhmat Grozny. Idan Azzi put Mahachkala ahead in the 38th minute. Kenzhebek Galyzhanov equalised late for Sochi in the 83rd minute, but it was not enough.
With only one game left, Sochi remains four points adrift of the relegation playoff spot. The result means they will drop into the Pari League next season. Sochi FC’s relegation ends their brief stay in the top division. The club will now prepare for life in the second tier after finishing bottom of the league table. Their next campaign begins in the Pari League.
