Hein Simons, Once Known as Heintje, Celebrates 70th Birthday Amid Hearing Challenges

Hein Simons, the Dutch singer who rose to fame as Heintje at the age of 12, is turning 70 today. However, his career, which began in his parents' bar in Kerkrade, near the German border, has been impacted by hearing difficulties.

In December 1967, Simons captured the hearts of millions when he sang "Mama" on the ZDF show "Der Goldene Schuß" and received a record-breaking number of audience votes. His success continued, with tours in China and several CD releases in recent years.

However, Simons' voice change and hearing issues have led to a return to using his real name and the cancellation of all concerts until his hearing improves to 100%. Despite these challenges, he looks back on his career with humility and gratitude.

Simons' career in music started in his parents' bar, where he would sing along to the jukebox and entertain guests. His thick dark hair, cheeky smile, and bell-clear soprano voice made him an instant sensation. Heintje had a unique mix of cheek and schmaltz that endeared him to audiences.

Modern hearing aid technologies offer hope for preserving and supporting Simons' singing career amid his hearing difficulties. Digital signal processing, directional microphones, Bluetooth connectivity, customized fitting and tuning, and noise reduction algorithms can enhance speech and music clarity, focus on specific sounds, connect with audio devices, and improve sound quality in noisy environments.

Simons' father previously worked in the coal mines of Limburg but had to stop due to a dust lung. Despite the odds, Simons considers himself to have had a lot of luck in his career. He now lives with his family on an estate with many horses in the tri-border area.

Simons' album "Heintje and I" was a big success in Germany a few years ago, featuring a duet with the young Heintje made possible by technology. The album, which includes several CDs, offers a poignant look back at Simons' career and his enduring legacy.
