Sharjah becomes first Arab Guest of Honour at Warsaw Book Fair
Sharjah has made history as the first Arab Guest of Honour at the Warsaw International Book Fair. Under the theme Two Civilisations. One Language of Letters, the emirate is showcasing its cultural ties with Poland through dozens of events over four days. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi emphasised that understanding between civilisations does not require them to be alike—only open to dialogue. The programme features 18 performances by the Sharjah National Band at the Warsaw National Theatre. Alongside music, an initiative called Tasawurat pairs Emirati and Polish artists to create works inspired by Arabic and Polish poetry. Sheikha Bodour highlighted books as a bridge, enabling civilisations to engage with dignity and depth.
Polish officials welcomed Sharjah’s contribution. Marta Cienkowska, Poland’s Minister of Culture and National Heritage, praised the emirate’s respect for Polish culture and history. Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Marshal of the Sejm, called the participation a valuable cultural exchange. Sheikha Bodour also quoted His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, stressing that dialogue between civilisations is not optional but essential. The events aim to strengthen ties through shared artistic and literary expression.
The four-day celebration marks a milestone in Arab-Polish cultural relations. Through performances, poetry, and discussions, Sharjah and Warsaw are fostering connections beyond language and tradition. The initiative sets a precedent for future exchanges between the two regions.
