Seattle Storm's injury crisis deepens ahead of Valkyries showdown

The Seattle Storm face a tough challenge as they take on the Golden State Valkyries in Game 1 at Chase Center. Already weakened by injuries, Seattle will be without key player Ezi Magbegor for the next 6-8 weeks due to a foot problem. The Valkyries, meanwhile, enter the matchup with confidence after edging Seattle 78-76 in their preseason clash.

Golden State’s defensive strength will test Seattle’s depleted roster. Last season, the Valkyries held the third-best defensive rating in the league at 99.8, and their switching scheme has proven difficult for opponents to crack. Seattle, missing both Magbegor and Kate Martin, lacks the scoring depth to consistently break through.

Veronica Burton’s role expands in Martin’s absence. During preseason, her usage rate jumped by 6.1% when Martin was off the floor. Burton averaged 11.0 field goal attempts per game in those minutes, suggesting she will shoulder a heavy offensive load. However, Seattle’s struggles extend beyond scoring—defensively, Awa Fam steps into the starting lineup but lacks the presence to deter Golden State’s inside drives. The Valkyries also hold an edge in matchups. Gabby Williams, an elite wing defender, is expected to shadow Seattle’s Flau’jae Johnson. In their preseason meeting, Johnson managed just a 36% effective field goal percentage when guarded by top-tier wings. Meanwhile, Janelle Salaün, despite shooting 1-for-7 in preseason, still found five open looks—a sign of Golden State’s ability to generate opportunities even on off nights. Home advantage further favours the Valkyries. Their narrow preseason win over Seattle hints at a closely contested series, but Golden State’s consistency and defensive structure give them the upper hand in this opener.

Seattle’s injury woes and limited scoring options leave them at a clear disadvantage. Golden State’s disciplined defence and home-court edge position them well to control the game. Without Magbegor’s interior presence and Martin’s offensive contributions, the Storm will need unexpected performances to challenge the Valkyries’ system.
