NBA leads global sports popularity as Michael Jordan remains the most iconic US athlete

A new global survey has revealed the most iconic US athletes and the popularity of major sports leagues around the world. The NBA leads as the most-followed American league internationally, with 75% of fans actively engaging with it. Meanwhile, legendary figures like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant still dominate fan rankings decades after their careers peaked.

Michael Jordan tops the list of the most iconic US athletes, securing 20% of the vote. Kobe Bryant follows in second place with 8%, while LeBron James ranks fourth at 7%. Further down, Stephen Curry sits ninth with 3%, and Magic Johnson holds the eleventh spot with 2%.

The survey also highlights the global reach of US sports teams. The Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers, and New York Yankees stand out as the most popular franchises in their respective leagues. Meanwhile, the NFL remains well-represented, with Tom Brady ranked as the highest active player at seventh place, earning 4% of the vote. Alexandre Dreyfus, CEO of Chiliz, emphasised the survey’s findings on international fan engagement. He noted that growing global interest is crucial for the expansion of US sports teams and leagues.

The results confirm the NBA’s dominance in global popularity, with one in five fans following it closely. At the same time, athletes like Jordan and Bryant continue to shape the legacy of US sports long after retirement. Teams and leagues are now focusing on strengthening their international presence to capitalise on this growing fanbase.
