Sabah's Kaamatan Festival unveils RM559M boost for agriculture and food security

Sabah’s Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, officially launched the state-level Kaamatan Festival in Papar. The event highlighted the region’s deep agricultural roots and cultural traditions. During the ceremony, key announcements were made to boost local development and food security. Papar, known for its fertile paddy fields and strong cultural heritage, hosted this year’s festival. The Chief Minister used the occasion to stress the importance of unity and cooperation in achieving Sabah’s development goals under Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0.

The state government revealed a RM559.85 million allocation for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry (MAFFI) in 2023. These funds will focus on improving food security and increasing the self-sufficiency rate (SSR) across Sabah. With global economic uncertainties looming, officials emphasised the need for a stable food supply. To support this, the government is expanding padi cultivation in Papar and nearby districts. Additionally, a RM1 million grant was announced for a new covered futsal court with a grandstand in Papar. The project aims to enhance local sports facilities while reinforcing community ties.

The Kaamatan Festival once again showcased Sabah’s agricultural strength and cultural pride. The latest funding and development plans target better food security and improved living standards. These initiatives form part of broader efforts to secure the state’s economic future.
