Restored 1935 Mexican classic Janitzio returns on DVD and Blu-ray May 12
The classic Mexican film Janitzio (1935) will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on May 12. This restored edition, presented in Spanish with English subtitles, brings a pivotal work of early Mexican cinema back to audiences.
The story unfolds on the remote island of Janitzio in Lake Pátzcuaro. Directed by Carlos Navarro, it stars Adela Valdés, Emilio Fernández, and Gilberto González in a tale of love, betrayal, and justice deeply tied to Purépecha traditions. The film follows Zirahuén, an indigenous fisherman played by Fernández, who is wrongfully imprisoned after a clash with outsiders. His beloved, Eréndira (Valdés), sacrifices herself to a greedy speculator named Manuel to secure his release. Upon his return, Zirahuén seeks vengeance but ultimately forgives Eréndira—only for the villagers to impose their own harsh punishment.
Set against the stunning landscapes of Michoacán, Janitzio blends silent-era expressionism with the social realism that later defined Mexico’s Golden Age of cinema. The story reflects the moral and cultural conflicts of post-revolutionary Mexico, where tradition and modernity collide.
Navarro’s direction captures both the natural beauty of the region and the deep-rooted Purépecha customs. The film remains a powerful exploration of justice, loyalty, and the struggles of rural communities in a changing society. This new release offers viewers a chance to experience a foundational work of Mexican cinema. The restored version preserves the film’s visual richness and emotional depth, ensuring its legacy endures for modern audiences. Janitzio will be available in high definition from May 12.
