Resident Evil 9 redefines horror with eerily human-like zombies and Leon's return

Resident Evil 9 has introduced a fresh take on horror with its unsettling new zombies. Director Koshi Nakanishi wanted these creatures to feel more human, making them far scarier than before. The game also brings back fan-favourite Leon Kennedy, blending intense action with chilling moments. The latest instalment features zombies infected with a mutated T-virus strain. Unlike previous versions, these infected retain traces of their past lives—some still clean, eat, or even use weapons. Nakanishi explained that their lingering humanity makes them more disturbing.

New zombie types add to the terror, including ‘cleaning zombies,’ oversized ‘chungus’ variants, and infected BSAA soldiers. Each behaves unpredictably, forcing players to adapt quickly. Producer Masato Kumazawa highlighted that the game relies on tension and anticipation rather than cheap jump scares.

Leon Kennedy’s sections provide a break from the horror, offering fast-paced action to balance the dread. Meanwhile, Rhodes Hill Hospital stands out as the game’s most terrifying location. Its mix of psychological and visceral scares has become a talking point among players.

The developers aimed for an ‘addictive kind of fear,’ keeping players hooked through a careful mix of horror and excitement. The result is a game that feels both fresh and true to the series’ roots. Resident Evil 9 pushes the franchise forward with its reimagined zombies and refined horror mechanics. The blend of Leon’s action sequences and the eerie, human-like infected creates a unique experience. Players can expect a game that lingers in the mind long after the controller is set down.
