The image shows a black and white photo of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, with her hands clasped in prayer. She is wearing a white robe with a blue sash and a golden halo around her head. Her face is serene and peaceful, and her eyes are closed in reverence. Her hair is pulled back in a bun and she has a peaceful expression on her face.

Portugal's GNR launches 'Safe Pilgrimage' ahead of Fátima celebrations

The National Republican Guard (GNR) has launched Operation 'Safe Pilgrimage' ahead of the May 13 celebrations in Cova da Iria. The event draws pilgrims from across Portugal and around the world. Authorities are urging extra caution due to challenging weather and heavy foot traffic. Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Canatário, a GNR spokesperson, highlighted the risks posed by poor visibility and sudden rain. He warned drivers to stay alert, as pilgrims may cross roads unexpectedly. The operation is being run alongside the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), and the Sanctuary of Fátima.

Canatário also expressed sadness over a recent tragedy—a pilgrim was struck and killed by a train in Coimbra. The incident has reinforced calls for vigilance during the celebrations. Operation 'Safe Pilgrimage' aims to protect the thousands travelling to Cova da Iria. Authorities are coordinating closely to manage traffic, weather hazards, and crowd safety. The GNR has stressed that both drivers and pedestrians must remain cautious throughout the event.
