Portugal unveils a wine university and a satirical podcast mocking elites

The Portuguese government has announced two unusual new projects this month. One involves a satirical podcast mocking professionals, while the other is a university dedicated to winemaking. Both ideas have sparked discussion across the country. On 3 May, the podcast Making Fun of Hard Workers premiered on SIC. The show pokes fun at high-profile figures, including ministers, business leaders, and bankers. Its launch came just as the government revealed another ambitious plan.

Prime Minister Costa then unveiled the University of Wine, set to open in the Douro Valley. The institution will teach students the craft of grand winemaking. Critics noted the timing, as the government often introduces new schemes with added letters when older ones falter.

The latest proposal, called the PTCMNOPQRR, follows this pattern. No concrete plans exist yet, but officials aim to launch it before their term ends. The name’s length has already drawn comparisons to past projects that faced delays or setbacks. The University of Wine remains in early planning stages, with its future location confirmed as the Douro Valley. Meanwhile, the PTCMNOPQRR scheme has no fixed details but is expected to roll out soon. Both initiatives reflect the government’s habit of introducing bold ideas when previous ones struggle.
