Patti LaBelle's 60-year journey as the unstoppable Godmother of Soul
Patti LaBelle has spent over 60 years in music, earning the title 'Godmother of Soul'. At 82, she remains active, performing and recording with no plans to stop. Her career spans from gospel choirs to global fame, with hit records and multiple Grammys along the way. Born and raised in Philadelphia, she began singing in a church choir at just 10 years old. By her teens, she joined the group Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles, which later shortened its name to Labelle. The trio became known for bold performances and flamboyant costumes, breaking away from traditional styles.
In 1974, Labelle released Lady Marmalade, a song that turned into a timeless hit. The group disbanded in 1977 but stayed on good terms. LaBelle then launched a solo career, building a reputation for powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence.
Beyond music, she expanded into food and lifestyle brands. Her cookbooks became bestsellers, and she created Patti’s Good Life, a line of kitchenware and food products. Despite her success in other fields, singing has always remained her focus. LaBelle continues to tour and record, showing no signs of slowing down. Her longevity in the industry reflects both her talent and her dedication. With decades of performances behind her, she insists she will keep singing as long as she can.
