Oscar statuette lost after TSA dispute at JFK Airport
An Oscar statuette belonging to filmmaker Pavel Talankin went missing after a security dispute at New York’s JFK Airport. The trophy, awarded for the documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin, was later located by Lufthansa after initially being declared lost in Frankfurt. The incident began when Talankin attempted to board a Lufthansa flight with his Oscar. A TSA agent refused to let him carry it into the cabin, insisting it could be used as a weapon. Despite his protests, the statuette was placed in a cardboard box and loaded into the plane’s hold.
Upon landing in Frankfurt, Talankin discovered the Oscar was missing. Lufthansa initially confirmed it was not in their Frankfurt facility, leaving its whereabouts unknown. The airline later found the statuette and assured Talankin it was safe in their care.
David Borenstein, co-director of the documentary, shared details of the ordeal on Instagram. He questioned whether Talankin’s treatment would have differed if he were a well-known actor or fluent in English. Lufthansa apologised to Talankin and worked directly with him to return the award as soon as possible. The statuette has since been recovered and remains under Lufthansa’s supervision. The airline has committed to reuniting Talankin with his Oscar after the unexpected security-related delay. The incident has raised questions about how valuable items are handled during air travel.
