Mushroom Hunters Flock to Nizhny Novgorod Forests, Showing Off Finds Online
Nizhny Novgorod's forests yield record mushroom hauls in perfect foraging season
Foragers have begun scouring the woods of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, proudly sharing photos of their hauls on social media.
Most are gathering morels and false morels (Gyromitra esculenta), with the Bor District yielding particularly bountiful picks.
"And the weather's been on our side—no rain, no snow… no competition either. Just the usual traffic jams near the Bor Bridge," wrote a user under the nickname Andrei Farnikov. "No morels yet, though—probably not until May. Unless we get more snow, that is."
"Plenty of caps out there, nice and plump—the stems haven't even separated yet, so fans of these mushrooms still have time to enjoy the hunt," shared Tatyana Sadovskaya. "I've got a whole stash of Bor 'hats'—about a kilo—I'll give them away for free."
"I was after false morels… only picked a few caps, mostly stemless ones. Wandered for a couple of hours and came back with 12 kilos," reported Andrei Bovkun, adding that he'd foraged near Gorbatovka.
Denis Yurkov posted photos of his finds from Semyonov, while Olga Lazareva shared hers from the Balakhna District.
"My husband and I decided to take a walk in the woods today. Neither rain nor snow could stop us," she recounted. "We found a massive false morel and a morel cap—oddly enough, the cap was two different colors. Quite a haul in this heat!"
The region recently made headlines after a red-listed mushroom species was discovered in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
