NHL playoffs deliver shocks as new contenders rise and Florida falls early

This year’s playoffs have already brought surprises and fresh faces. For the first time in years, the Flyers and Ducks have reached the postseason, ending long waits. Meanwhile, the back-to-back champion Florida team was knocked out early, ensuring a new Cup winner will be crowned this season. The Ducks advanced past the first round for the first time since 2017, defeating Edmonton in a tight series. After the loss, Oilers star Connor McDavid admitted his team had been inconsistent all year. Under new coach Joel Quenneville, the Ducks now move forward with momentum.

The Avalanche and Wild will meet in the next round, both looking to improve on last year’s early exits. Colorado, making its ninth straight playoff appearance, faces Minnesota, which has not reached the second round since 2015. Rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt noted the energy from Wild fans after their recent win. Philadelphia and Minnesota, absent from last year’s postseason, have now joined Colorado in the second round. The Flyers, back after six years, will take on the Hurricanes, who have advanced in each of the past eight seasons. If Utah completes a comeback against Vegas, seven of the eight remaining teams will be new to this stage. With Florida eliminated, the field is wide open. The second round promises fresh matchups and teams hungry for a deeper run.

The playoffs have already reshaped expectations. Three teams—Colorado, Minnesota, and Philadelphia—returned to the second round after missing last year’s postseason. The Ducks and Flyers ended long droughts, while the Hurricanes continue their streak of deep runs. A new champion is now certain, with several underdogs still in contention.
