New Year's Concert in Vienna: What Were the Performed Compositions?

The 2025 Vienna New Year's Concert, a much-anticipated event in the classical music calendar, is set to take place at the Musikverein in Vienna on New Year's Day. This annual tradition, conducted by the Vienna Philharmonic, will be led this year by the renowned Italian conductor, Riccardo Muti.

The concert program, as in previous years, primarily features works by members of the Strauss family—Johann Strauss II, known as "The Waltz King," Josef Strauss, and Johan Strauss I, often referred to as "The Father." Other prominent Viennese composers, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, will also be represented.

The concert will open with Freiheits-Marsch, Op. 226, a piece by Johan Strauss I, followed by a selection of waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss II, including popular compositions like The Blue Danube and Tales from the Vienna Woods. The program will also include works by Josef Strauss, such as Dorfschwalben aus Österreich (Village Swallows from Austria) and Transactionen (Transactions).

In a notable first, the concert will feature a waltz by Constanze Geiger, marking the inclusion of a work by a female composer. The Vienna Philharmonic will also perform a march by Austrian composer Josef Hellmesberger from his opera Das Veilchenmädchen (The Violet Girl).

As is customary, the Vienna Philharmonic will be joined by a prominent guest conductor, with Zubin Mehta directing the specific performance of Johan Strauss II's Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka. The concert will also include music by two other composers outside of the Strauss family, reflecting Mozart's enduring influence in Viennese music.

The tradition of festive and elegant entertainment continues with the inclusion of light operetta pieces from other Viennese composers. In the spirit of the official New Year’s Concert, concerts like "Salute to Vienna" recreate this repertoire, focusing on Strauss and Viennese classics.

The 2025 Vienna New Year's Concert promises to be a celebration of Viennese musical heritage, showcasing a curated selection of dance music and classical masterpieces by the Strauss family and Mozart. Exact titles and the full program will be officially released closer to the event. The concert will be broadcast on TV on New Year's Day, allowing music lovers worldwide to share in this century-old tradition.
