Bettany Hughes uncovers Europe's buried urban secrets in new series

Curve Media and SandStone Global have partnered to produce a six-part history travel format, Secrets of the City, for Channel 4 as Bettany Hughes uncovers the secrets, astonishing facts and rich stories of the world's great cities.

This new factual format will see esteemed historian and author, Hughes, visit six incredible cities. With her characteristic curiosity, wonder and fascination, she'll reveal their untold stories. From Athens and Sofia, each episode will be built around Hughes exploring a single location. Whether it's Dubrovnik's pivotal role as a hinge between East and West or Riga's hidden underground tunnels, all will be a deep dive into history where Hughes throws open doors usually closed, delves into their past, and explores the discoveries and facts that have shaped these cities into the places that exists today.

With the help of local experts, from academics and archivists to residents whose family stories are steeped in the events being explored, each episode unfolds like a historical investigation.

Hughes commented: "We're delighted to be partnering with Curve Media, Channel 4 and SBS Australia on this ambitious new series to reveal the remarkable stories of some of the most iconic and fascinating cities, uncovering their hidden secrets. It is always a joy to bring layers of human history to light."

Camilla Lewis, Curve Media co-CEO, added: "Curve are thrilled to launch our partnership with Bettany and Sandstone with this exciting new format that will unearth extraordinary revelations about some of the world's most-loved cities."

The project was ordered by Rachel Bailey for Channel 4 with a pre-sale to SBS Australia, in deals brokered by Marmalade Sky TV. Executive Producers will be Charlie Bunce for Curve and Nick Catliff for Sandstone.
