National anthem of Christmas, 'O Holy Night', remains the most popular choice for the ninth year in a row as declared by the nation.
In a heartwarming celebration of the festive season, the carol 'O Holy Night' has been voted as the best-loved Christmas carol of all time in the annual poll for 'The Nation's Favourite Carol'. The Top 30 list was revealed on Christmas Day by Alexander Armstrong.
Composed in 1847 by French composer Adolphe Adam, 'O Holy Night' has been widely popularized among various singers and audiences. Notable renditions include those by Luciano Pavarotti and Mariah Carey. The carol's enduring popularity is evident, as it continues to captivate listeners 170 years after its creation.
The Top 30 list includes a mix of traditional favourites and new entries. 'In the Bleak Midwinter', originally a poem by Christina Rossetti, was set to music by Gustav Holst and voted as the nation's second favourite carol. 'Angels from the Realms of Glory' and 'Ding Dong! Merrily on High' are new entries in the Top 30.
'Silent Night', 'Carol of the Bells', and 'It Came Upon a Midnight Clear' also featured highly in the countdown, securing fourth, third, and tenth positions respectively. 'It Came Upon a Midnight Clear' climbed four places from No.14 to No.10 in the ranking.
The voting for 'The Nation's Favourite Carol' took place over three weeks, with the public casting their votes to decide their favourite carols. The annual event has become a cherished tradition, bringing joy and festive spirit to many.
While a definitive Top 30 list for 'The Nation's Favourite Carol' from December 2024 could not be found in the search results, previous polls and lists such as the 2008 BBC Music Magazine poll have included carols like 'In the Bleak Midwinter', 'In Dulci Jubilo', and 'O Come, All Ye Faithful'.
Despite the lack of a specific, up-to-date Top 30 list, the spirit of the poll and the love for these timeless carols remain strong. As we celebrate another year of Christmas, 'O Holy Night' continues to shine as the nation's favourite carol, filling our hearts with peace, joy, and the spirit of the season.
