Minneapolis Renames Street to Honor Fallen Officer Jamal Mitchell
A section of Blaisdell Avenue in Minneapolis has been renamed in honour of Officer Jamal Mitchell, who died in the line of duty last year. Friends, neighbours and officials gathered recently to pay tribute to his courage and sacrifice. The street now bears the name 'Officer Jamal Mitchell Way' as a lasting memorial. Officer Jamal Mitchell was fatally shot in 2024 while responding to an active shooter. He had been attempting to help the individual who ultimately took his life. His actions earned him the Medal of Honor and a posthumous Purple Heart.
At the dedication ceremony, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described Mitchell as 'a hero who gave his life to protect others without a second thought.' Interim Police Chief Katie Blackwell encouraged passersby to reflect on his example and the values he embodied. Friends and neighbours also shared their memories. Chris Dunker, a close friend, simply said, 'Rest easy, brother.' Mitchell’s former commander noted that seeing his name on the street sign serves as a reminder of the bonds that connect the community. The gathering highlighted not only Mitchell’s bravery but also the impact he had on those around him. Many spoke of his selflessness and dedication to keeping others safe.
