Twins shake up roster, call up rookie John Klein after Woods Richardson's struggles

The Minnesota Twins have made a roster change, recalling rookie pitcher John Klein from Triple-A St. Paul. This move comes after the team designated Simeon Woods Richardson for assignment on Saturday. The decision follows a difficult season for the struggling starter. Simeon Woods Richardson, a second-round pick by the New York Mets in 2018, broke into the majors in 2022. He joined the Twins' starting rotation in 2024 and posted a 12-9 record with a 4.11 ERA over the next two seasons. However, this year has been far tougher.

His latest outing saw him allow five runs in just 2 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox. Across 12 games (10 starts) in 2026, he remains winless, with seven losses—the most in the majors. He has also surrendered 41 earned runs, another league-high figure. Earlier this month, the Twins briefly shifted him to the bullpen in an attempt to turn things around.

Taking his place is John Klein, who previously appeared in the majors this season. During his first stint, he went 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA over 2 1/3 innings. The Twins will now look to the young pitcher to fill the gap in the roster. Woods Richardson’s departure marks the end of a challenging campaign for the once-promising starter. Klein’s recall gives the Twins a fresh arm as they adjust their pitching staff. The team will hope for better results from the rookie in the coming games.
