MHADA and LIC unite to redevelop Mumbai's 68 crumbling heritage buildings
A meeting was held at MHADA Headquarters in Bandra (East) to address the urgent need for redeveloping 68 old and dilapidated LIC-owned cessed buildings in Mumbai. These structures, spread across Fort, Girgaon, Matunga, and Dadar, currently house 1,764 tenants, including both residential and commercial occupants. The session was led by MHADA Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Sanjeev Jaiswal (IAS). During the discussions, LIC officials confirmed their interest in redeveloping the buildings, which have deteriorated over time. The focus remained on safeguarding residents and preventing potential risks to life and property.
MHADA assured full support to speed up the redevelopment process. The meeting also emphasised prioritising the interests of the 815 residential and 949 commercial tenants currently living and working in these buildings. The buildings, classified as cessed properties, have long been a concern due to their ageing infrastructure. Redevelopment plans aim to modernise them while ensuring minimal disruption to occupants.
The collaboration between LIC and MHADA marks a step toward revitalising these structures. Redevelopment will address safety concerns while accommodating the needs of existing tenants. Further details on timelines and execution are expected to follow.
