Mexico's gritty draw against Portugal fuels World Cup confidence
After the draw with Portugal in the reopening of Estadio Banorte, opinions were divided between those who see it as a poor result for Mexico's national team and those who argue that El Tricolor held their own against an elite opponent.
Erik Lira falls into the latter camp—and goes further, insisting the team is ready to make history at the upcoming World Cup.
"We take away positive feelings from this match. It was a warm-up for the World Cup, and we're fully committed to delivering Mexico's best-ever tournament performance," he declared after the game.
He also praised the national team's mentality. "Winning is always better, but we didn't lose, and now we're focused on the match against Belgium—another top-tier opponent. The key thing is that no one got injured, and we showed that fighting spirit, that intensity and attitude that defines Mexican players."

Facing elite opponents seen as crucial test
Players, coaching staff, and fans all agreed on one point: the value of testing themselves against high-caliber teams like Portugal, who pose a major challenge.
Erick Sánchez of Club América emphasized that "going toe-to-toe with these teams is a positive experience."
Roberto Alvarado, the winger from Chivas, added, "Playing against this level of competition makes us stronger and exposes our weaknesses—because these teams don't forgive mistakes. Today was a tough match, but we managed it well."
