- Kuzma the Gardener
May 1 Unites Ancient Folklore, Lunar Energy and Historic Milestones
Old Style date: April 18.
Today honors the Venerable Cosmas of Chalcedon, often called the composer of canons in praise of the Lord.
In Russia, this was Cuckoo Day: the bird begins its calling in the forests and groves. Several omens were tied to it: if the cuckoo calls, it is time to sow flax; if it calls from a dry tree, expect frost. It was also believed that if a cuckoo flies over a village, a fire will break out.
On Kuzma's Day (Cosmas's Day), it was traditional to plant carrots and beets. Interestingly, in Russia, women were responsible for sowing and weeding vegetables—not just because the work was lighter than plowing, but because it was believed that anything planted by a man would only bloom and bear no fruit. While digging the beds, they would say: "Kuzma has come—peered into the cellar, took a spade, and turned the earth by the house."
Before sowing, peasant women would go at dawn to hidden springs, known as vowed wells, to moisten the seeds in the water and drop copper coins into the source. Another custom required soaking seeds in river water for three dawns. This had to be done in secret; otherwise, the harvest would be poor—an envious eye could bring great harm. People said: "A stranger's eye is envious, and envy, like rust, will devour the whole crop." And if you ate even a single seed meant for planting, worms would infest all the grown vegetables.
Weather omens foretold the days ahead. A warm start to May meant cold would come by month's end, and vice versa. As the saying went: "If you plow in your shirt on Kuzma's Day, you'll sow in a fur coat." A cold May, however, promised a bountiful year. Heavy rains also signaled a good harvest. By the way, the first spring rain was used to wet one's hair, hoping it would grow as thick as May grass.
A person born on Kuzma's Day was destined to be a kind gardener, tending to vegetables without straining over the beds. If so, their fate would be fortunate.
