The image shows a painting of a large group of people standing in front of a stage, with some sitting on chairs and others standing on the floor. On the stage there are tables with various objects on them, and in the background there are curtains and pillars. At the top of the image, there is a ceiling with lights, suggesting that this is a scene from the 18th century.

Berlin's Theatertreffen Opens with The Leopard in a Dazzling Festival Kickoff

BERLIN (dpa/bb) — The Theatertreffen festival kicks off Friday evening (7:00 p.m.) in Berlin. Each year, a jury selects what it considers the ten most "remarkable productions" from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, inviting them to perform in the capital.

The festival opens with The Leopard (Il Gattopardo), staged by Zurich's Schauspielhaus. Director Pınar Karabulut brings the story of a 19th-century Sicilian prince to the stage.

One of the major theater festivals in the German-speaking world, Theatertreffen runs through May 17. The invited performances will be held at various venues across Berlin, with the opening night taking place at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele.

Several productions will also be available to stream from home, as broadcaster 3sat will offer them online and on television. The Leopard, for example, will be available online starting this Friday.
