Maryland mosques tighten security after deadly California attack

Maryland mosques are increasing security measures after a deadly attack in California. Three people were killed in a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday. The incident has raised concerns among Muslim communities nationwide, prompting calls for stronger safety protocols. Zainab Chaudry, director of Maryland’s Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), described the San Diego shooting as a devastating loss. She has since been in contact with mosque leaders and organisations in the Baltimore area to discuss safety improvements.

Local Islamic centres are now reviewing and upgrading their security measures. Some already have protections in place, while others are preparing for upcoming events with heightened precautions. Chaudry stressed that mosques should remain places of safety, learning, and community. CAIR Maryland is urging mosques to apply for state and federal grants to fund better security infrastructure. The organisation has also reported a record number of complaints in 2025, with over 8,600 cases handled nationwide. Chaudry noted that local mosques have faced previous threats, including bomb scares and intimidating messages.

The shooting in San Diego has led to immediate action in Maryland. Mosques are reinforcing security, and leaders are seeking financial support to prevent future threats. The measures aim to ensure worshippers can gather without fear of violence.
