Malaysia's Youth to Steer AI's Ethical Future at ICYouth 2026

The 5th International Conference on Youth 2026 (ICYouth) has highlighted the role of AI in shaping social wellbeing through ethical and inclusive practices. With AI already driving over 23 per cent of Malaysia’s GDP in 2022, the focus now turns to how young people can influence its future development for broader benefits. The conference stressed that AI’s long-term effects will depend on how it is designed and applied, particularly by younger generations. The values embedded in AI systems, the frameworks behind them, and the data used today will shape outcomes for years to come.

To support responsible innovation, the government will soon launch the Government Innovation Initiative (GII). This programme will create a structured environment for testing, refining, and scaling new technologies—including AI—while ensuring ethical standards are met. Economic projections suggest AI could boost Malaysia’s annual GDP growth by 0.8 to 1.2 percentage points. By 2030, its contribution may reach between RM13 billion and RM20 billion each year, reinforcing its importance to the country’s digital economy.

The conference underscored the need for youth engagement in AI’s ethical development. With structured initiatives like GII and clear economic benefits on the horizon, Malaysia is positioning itself to harness AI’s potential while addressing challenges in fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.
