Fulda's Smart City Platform Cuts Energy Use and Eases Traffic Congestion
Fulda has launched a new smart city platform to improve urban life and sustainability. The Foll smart system provides real-time traffic updates, parking availability, and adaptive street lighting. Authorities say the project will cut energy use and reduce congestion around key areas like the central train station. The initiative is part of a wider €3.3 million pilot, with 90% of funding coming from the state of Hesse. Fulda is one of just two municipalities in the region leading this kind of smart city development. A key feature is the modernisation of 688 streetlights, now fitted with sensors and adaptive controls that adjust brightness based on traffic conditions.
Around 25 smart traffic sensors have been installed along major roads. These monitor flow and help optimise both lighting and traffic light timing. The system has already slashed electricity use for streetlights by up to 79% compared to older setups. The **Foll smart** platform, now live at [www.foll-smart.de](http://www.foll-smart.de), shows live parking availability near the train station. Drivers can check spaces in advance, cutting down on unnecessary searches and easing congestion. The same sensors also track temperature, soil moisture, and recycling bin fill levels, with all data accessible online via the Urban Data Platform. City officials are using this information for better planning. Traffic light programs adjust automatically, and operational workflows are becoming more efficient.
The project combines energy savings, reduced traffic delays, and data-driven decision-making. Residents and visitors can now access live updates on parking and road conditions. With most of the funding covered by the state, Fulda’s investment focuses on long-term sustainability and smarter urban management.
