KLIA Aerotrain to resume 24-hour service by late May 2023
The aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is set to return to full 24-hour operations by late May 2023. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has completed all required tests and submitted a detailed report to the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for final review. The move follows months of maintenance and reliability improvements since the system’s restart in mid-2022. The KLIA Terminal 1 Aerotrain first resumed operations on July 1, 2022, after a period of suspension. Since then, it has transported around seven million passengers and completed over 53,000 return trips. Despite this, the system faced 19 incidents between July 2 and September 30, 2022, with some caused by passengers forcing doors open.
To address these issues, MAHB introduced a comprehensive action plan (CAP) aimed at boosting reliability. The system’s operational service availability (OSA) now stands at 98.41 per cent. Currently, the aerotrain runs during the day but pauses for a few hours each night to allow for maintenance and safety checks. MAHB has confirmed that all necessary assessments have been carried out. The final step before restoring round-the-clock service depends on approval from APAD, which is expected by the end of May 2023.
Once approved, the aerotrain will operate non-stop, removing the current nightly maintenance window. The system’s improved reliability and high availability rate suggest smoother operations for passengers moving between terminals. MAHB’s ongoing efforts aim to ensure long-term stability for the service.
