Maharashtra Plans 200 EV Charging Stations by 2035 to Boost Electric Buses

The Maharashtra government has announced plans to install 200 electric vehicle charging stations across the state by 2035. This move supports the conversion of the entire State Transport (ST) bus fleet to electric power while encouraging private investment in charging infrastructure. A high-level meeting confirmed the project, attended by key officials including MSRTC Vice Chairman Dr. Madhav Kusekar and Financial Advisor Girish Deshmukh. The initiative aims to make the state-run transport corporation self-sufficient in adopting electric buses.

The charging stations will be built and operated by private developers under a public-private partnership model. Each developer will receive 1,500 sq ft of space on lease to set up the facilities. The tendering process for the project is set to begin within days. Beyond serving ST buses, developers can also offer charging services to private electric vehicles during off-hours. This dual-use approach maximises the infrastructure’s efficiency while supporting broader electric vehicle adoption.

The project marks a significant step toward electrifying Maharashtra’s public transport system. With 200 charging stations planned by 2035, the state aims to ensure reliable infrastructure for its growing fleet of electric buses. Private sector involvement will play a key role in expanding access to charging facilities.
